Background: The place: Earth. The time: our contemporary era; let's call it 2018. A few years ago, strange portals opened all over the planet, sowing worry and confusion. Those concerns became deadly real when monsters came rushing out those doors into a terrified and unprepared society. At the same time, some humans awoke to supernatural strength and magical abilities apparently managed by some video game-like "system." Not only did they become powerful enough to combat the monsters pouring into their homes, these Awakened humans even took the fight to them, traveling through the portals to the fantasy-like pocket dimensions where the monsters spawn. They discovered that routinely clearing these spaces of monsters, particularly the strongest "boss" monster of each area, would prevent the monster population from spilling over into the human world.

Given how similar these mechanics were to those of popular RPGs, humanity quickly repurposed gaming terms for their new reality. The monsters' homes became known as dungeons, concepts like stat windows and skill ranks rose in public consciousness, and the Awakened formed guilds of Hunters. Their job? Raid dungeons, kill monsters, and bring back materials found nowhere on Earth. Soon enough, being a combat-class Hunter was the most coveted, lucrative career in the world.

At least, if you awakened with suitably high-ranked stats and skills. A-, B-, and S-ranked Hunters could take on the world... but what about everyone else?

Personal History: Years before the first dungeon break, Han Yoojin was an average guy completely devoted to raising his younger brother, Yoohyun. The day monsters poured into Seoul, seventeen-year-old Yoohyun awoke as a natural-born S-ranker, instantly making him one of the most powerful beings on Earth--an object of hero worship and fear all at once. Almost overnight, Yoohyun cut ties with his normie big brother, who eventually awakened as a piddling F-ranker, barely any stronger than an unawakened human.

Bewildered by his brother's rejection and jaded by the subsequent eight years of being treated like crap by a society prizing dungeon-diving ability above all else, Yoojin grew resentful and jaded. As an F-rank Hunter with no combat skills whatsoever, the only jobs he could get were exploitative mining gigs. Low-rankers like him died left and right, higher-ranked combat Hunters took over 80-90% of his earnings, and, despite their estrangement, he was frequently accused of mooching off Yoohyun, who by then was the guildmaster of one of Korea's top Hunter guilds. Yoojin also gained an unfortunate reputation

Physical affection:
Physical violence: Check with me! Grabbing/manhandling him is generally fine (and very easy to do), but anything causing injury is something I'd rather work out OOC first.
Shipping: All genders, 20+. Seems like he's always been too busy to date... (and also, g-good luck getting his baby brother's blessing...)
Mind-reading: Totally! He has no mental defenses of his own. Let me know IC- or OOC-ly if your character wants to read his mind, and I'll include his thoughts in my tags.
Magical information: Though Yoojin comes off to both regular and magical senses as pretty much a normal human in most ways, being an Awakened means he's slightly stronger than average and possesses some mana (i.e., magical energy). Also, those who are magically sensitive may notice foreign sources of mana implanted in his body.
IC offensive subjects/triggers that might come up: Parental neglect, parental death, physical and financial abuse, kidnapping, serious threats to agency... possible pseudo M-preg...?

On the outside, Yoojin's the most normal-seeming, friendly neighborhood twenty-something you could ever meet. Perhaps he's a little down on his luck, but he's cheerful, hardworking, and sarcastically funny, and he's always ready to support anyone he sees having a hard time. Like many friendly neighborhood types, he's nosy as heck, worming his way into everyone's business with bullish tenacity behind his smile. On his own part, he tends to overreact cartoonishly to mild inconveniences and downplay actual lasting hurts.

He's also the quintessential proud parent-ish figure. Anyone meeting him will know within two minutes how handsome, smart, strong, kind, polite, and adorable his little brother, Yoohyun, is. He's not only like that about Yoohyun, though. He has at least a half-dozen "kids" at home to gush over, none of whom turn out to be actual human children of his, and several of which are, uh, actual, literal monsters? He'll obviously soon apply this propensity to take anyone and anything under his wing, care for and encourage the growth of those parts of them that make them unique and strong, to those he meets in Rosavelle as well.

Digging even a little bit beneath that bright, aggressively supportive exterior reveals what else Yoojin is: a survival-oriented, scrappy schemer with absolutely no chill. Even before the dungeon breaks introduced "suddenly, monsters!" as an everyday fact of existence, Yoojin's life was characterized by precariousness and a lack of safety. Now he fights tooth and nail to secure any scrap of protection and power he can get--if not for himself, then for those in his care. His powerlessness compared to the people around him has forced him towards slyer, underhanded means of obtaining those things he wants, and he's quick to misrepresent the truth if it seems effective.

Even deeper within him lies an abandonment complex the size of the planet Jupiter. Long before his parents died, Yoojin was already effectively an orphan; the way his brother later cut him off only tore the wound open again, and worse. A constant terror gnaws at the back of his mind, that as soon as he's no longer useful, interesting, or likable to others, they'll leave him, and he'll be alone and without anyone to help him in a world he's not built to survive. Loneliness isn't just painful. It's a death sentence he must avoid at all costs.

None of that negates how genuinely caring and nurturing he is, especially to young people who remind him of his own hurt and loneliness. He can't help but empathize, and that empathy drives him to provide all those things he lacked in his youth. Yoojin really is full of love to give, overflowing with it. What he doesn't know is how to be loved safely in return.
+ history
Background:
Youth:
  • Yoojin is born to normal, modern-day parents in normal, modern-day Seoul, Korea.
  • When Yoojin is five, his little brother, Yoohyun, is born. He instantly becomes the center of an adoring Yoojin's world.
  • Over time, the boys' parents get more and more afraid of the superhuman power they can sense in Yoohyun. They spend less time at home, avoiding both their children until they die in an accident when Yoojin is fifteen and Yoohyun is ten.
  • Yoojin drops out of school to work and take care of Yoohyun, hoping to save enough money to put Yoohyun through college. Yoohyun, for his part, puts all his natural talent into studying so he can get a good job and take care of Yoojin in the future.

Dungeon Shock:
  • When Yoojin is twenty-two and Yoohyun seventeen, "dungeons" open all over the world, allowing monsters to burst through into Earth. Humans also Awaken with powers, including Yoohyun. Yoohyun's sheer power earns him recognition as Korea's youngest S-rank.
  • Fearing that various enemies will target Yoojin to get to him, Yoohyun leaves home and cuts off most contact with Yoojin--without explaining the situation to his brother. Yoojin takes this distance suuuuuper well. Not.
  • Yoojin later Awakens with F-rank stats and no useful combat skills. Public opinion, which was never in his favor, turns totally against him. He can only get unsafe, poorly-paid dungeon gigs with low-level parties. Said parties are frequently wiped out with Yoojin the only survivor, which only makes his reputation as a leech and bad omen worse.
  • Yoojin survives these encounters due to a skill called "Final Thanks."

Wish Stone:
  • Yoojin, now 30, tags along on a normal raid in a D-rank dungeon, when a three-headed dragon ranked WAY higher than the dungeon should hold turns up and slaughters his party. Yoohyun then appears, equally inexplicably, and is killed protecting Yoojin. Final Thanks activates, temporarily transferring Yoohyun's strengths and skills to Yoojin at 2x strength, allowing him to slay the dragon that killed his brother.
  • The "system" awards Yoojin a Wish Stone for his impossible achievement, which Yoojin uses to turn back time five years, before he got his Awakening--before everything in his life truly went off the rails.
  • Returned to the body of his twenty-five-year-old self, and re-Awakening with the same crappy stats but new and improved support and resistance skills, Yoojin throws everything into reconciling with his baby brother and steering them off the path that leads to Yoohyun's death.
  • This leads to a wacky series of events where Yoojin makes allies of some of the most terrifying and powerful people in Korea, fudges some details about his Perfect Custodian powers so he can present himself as a monster tamer, gets rich quick, finds himself kidnapped a half-dozen times, blows up several buildings, kills a couple godlike alien beings, adopts like 30 assorted creatures/people, and births a pink fairy dragon.

Current Arc:
  • At Yoojin's canonpoint, he's been partially brainwashed, kidnapped, and physically harmed by a group working with the Chinese military, and so might be slightly less seemingly trusting than normal.

OVER 18? Ye, for sure
CURRENT CHARACTERS: None!

CHARACTER
NAME: Yoojin Han
CANON: My S-Class Hunters (A.K.A. The S-Classes That I Raised... it's translated a couple different ways)
CANON POINT: Webnovel ch. 382, as the new dungeon forms
BACKGROUND: Yoojin on the fan wiki. Since most of the actual things that happen in canon aren't reflected on the wiki, here's a super brief post-regression timeline:
  • Yoojin goes back in time and reconciles with his brother.
  • He re-Awakens with powerful new skills that support others' growth, but his stats are all still garbage.
  • Using these skills, he markets himself as a monster tamer capable of raising high-tier mounts, which garners him the interest of Korea's biggest dungeon-raiding guilds.
  • He learns about the origins of his world's dungeons, which are "transcendent" beings with godlike powers who use the dungeons to hasten the destruction of all worlds, and is charged by an opposing faction of transcendents to save the world by taking 50 S-rankers (high-level people/monsters) under his wing with his powers to help them grow. They do not explain how this will help.
  • Despite his mistrust, Yoojin continues to grow his army adopt more children than Batman apply his powers to S-rank humans and young monsters. He also gains new powers of his own, strengthens his alliances and close relationships, and uses his pre-regression knowledge to change certain events to better protect Korea and low-ranked people like him.
  • He's kidnapped and escapes on a number of occasions, for various reasons.
  • He manages to kill a couple transcendent bad guys, too.
  • He is told repeatedly (and physical evidence corroborates) that using skills that outstrip his capabilities this much is rapidly shortening his lifespan. Yoojin feels very much damned if he does, damned if he doesn't about it.
  • Most recently, he's escaped a particularly nasty kidnapping where he was partially brainwashed and very badly hurt, so he'll be coming into Bottlecap Bay a little touchy.

SUITABILITY: The appearance of "dungeons" and dangerous monsters in Yoojin's version of Earth have already forged him into a scrappy survivalist. As someone who's never had strength or fancy powers to rely on,

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Your character is on an exploration quest when they find an injured Pokemon in need of help. This Pokemon appears to be in distress and is quite dangerous, posing a risk to your character even if they mean well, and putting your quest mission at risk. What do they do? What are some possibilities of how they work with teammates to address this, or do they go at it alone?

Your character's worst enemy has recently appeared in game, and has joined the guild your character is part of. They both want to tackle the same quest, and your character's enemy suggests that they work together as a team to accomplish this goal. How does your character respond to this?

The leader of your character's guild has just approached your character with an offer: they will provide your character with extra supplies, reputation points, and help them with any of their current struggles. In exchange, they ask for your character to do a favor for them that may harm the other guilds, and will not specify what the favor is in advance. It sounds shady, but it's the deal of a lifetime in your character's path to get back home, and refusing it may cause strife for your character within their current guild. What do they think of this offer? What do they ultimately decide to do?

Due to shortages on supplies, the city is facing issues deciding where to cut corners during this rough time. Somehow, the responsibility has fallen on your character's shoulders, and they have to make a decision. If they send out an extra team of Pokemon, they will be able to gather more food, and through that, save the lives of dozens of starving Pokemon that were in dire need of nutrition. However, the only Pokemon available to scout for food are those working at the pokeclinic, and sending them out would mean certain death for at least two ill patients. What does your character decide to do? How do they feel about this choice, and how would they deal with the pushback that comes from either side?

POKEMON: Minun has it all for Yoojin. It's cute. It's small. It's as intimidating as a cupcake. Its claim to fame is double battles and supporting others. Even compared to its counterpart, Plusle, it's coded as the #2. It has more stats allocated to defense than offense, which both reflects Yoojin's lack of offensive abilities and reminds me of a protective item a friend gifted him that nullifies damage. (That item is also blue.) What really clinched the deal for me was this sentence from a Pokédex entry: "Minun is more concerned about cheering on its partners than its own safety." So is Yoojin Han.

One idea I find interesting--beyond the everyday comedy of turning an adult man into a tiny mouse with no fingers--is that, unlike Yoojin in his natural state, Minun actually can learn damage-dealing moves. Not only that, but Yoojin associates electricity with the most powerful human being he knows. Even if Minun is a relatively weak Pokémon, being an Electric-type could serve as a window into what it's like to have that kind of power himself. But I think Yoojin will still ultimately get more out of being creative with Minun's tricky/supporting moves like Play Nice, Helping Hand, Switcheroo, Baton Pass, and so on.

GUILD OPT-OUT: I think any of them could be interesting!

Heckin' Powers/Permissions

Skills marked with a 🐣 can be opted into below!

🐣 Perfect Custodian: A title Yoojin earned by raising a born S-ranker. To get someone in his custody, he has to tell them "I love you" or otherwise communicate that sentiment, and targets can easily not respond to or accept it; with people he isn't already taking care of, it usually takes more than one try. Skills associated with this title allow him to temporarily grant those in his "custody" a handful of associated buffs, particularly to their growth rate (like a boost in EXP earned) or power. A side effect of gaining custody over someone is that they will associate him with the best caretaker they've had, for good or for ill, for a month or two.

In [community profile] heckingame, I'm making it impossible for him to take anyone into his custody EXCEPT by contract. He will have to be vague about what his power is and does, since the buffs don't work if the target is aware of the effects of the keyword, but it can be something like, "Let's make a contract where I'll take care of you," or something. He'll also temporarily take on a physical aspect of someone he's brought into custody--like, if he got Maya, his ears would become feline like hers--to reflect how they're thinking of him as their caretaker. This effect would last a month or two, the same as the association with their best caretaker.

🐣 Passive resistances: He acquired very powerful resistance to poison (including drugs and alcohol), curses, and fear (i.e., intimidation). These resistances will also automatically apply to another person if they're physically close enough to hold. He can turn these resistances on and off at will. For Heckin' purposes, I'm knocking his general resistance down to A-rank and reducing it further to B-rank for both parties, if shared. Sharing any of these three resistances will be an OOC opt-in.

Stern Mother Hen Drill Sergeant: A.k.a. the "Teacher" skill. With this skill, Yoojin can share the senses of one or more beings in range both with himself and with others in the group, allowing for extremely coordinated cooperation. He can also choose to only share someone's senses one-way, to make defending against and countering an enemy much easier. The more people he links up and the more powerful they are, the more of a toll it takes on Yoojin, and he experiences a painful backlash if someone rejects the skill. This requires an IC opt-in.

Mindscape: Also an IC opt-in. Yoojin can bring someone into a shared mental landscape where physical limitations don't matter. Consent is required from all parties both to enter and to leave. Yoojin doesn't actually understand this skill very well and has never managed not to wipe himself out using it. In Heckin', he'll only be able to maintain it for half an hour maximum.

Hidden Object: A stealth skill that doesn't make him invisible, but instead difficult to perceive with the senses, even if someone is actively looking for him. Highly perceptive beings will still be able to find him.

🐣 As the Twig Is Bent, So Grows the Tree: When applied to people, this skill does not actually show Yoojin their current stats, but rather their potential. This appears to him as a status window with their name and species, potential stat ranks, and the best skills they might Awaken/might have Awakened with (and whether they're still locked or not). Other skills they can acquire later are not shown, nor are HP/mana/current status effects. The window looks slightly different when applied to monsters, but contains essentially the same information. For characters in Heckin', any of the above information can be blurred or otherwise made unavailable to him. There are also canon cases of powerful and perceptive people noticing him using this skill and stopping him. OOC opt-in, see below.

Plus One: Yoojin can share one of his skills (he usually shares one that doubles the effectiveness of offensive skills, which I'm reducing from 2x to 1.25x) with someone else he's in physical contact with. An IC opt-in.

🐣 Pat-Pat: Allows the user to calm a target by patting them. This skill gets stronger the more the target trusts the user, with the potential to work on highly-trusting targets even when they're actively trying to resist its effects. However, if the target is hostile towards him, it can backfire. OOC opt-in.

🐣 Rock-a-bye: Allows the user to make a target fall asleep by coaxing them to rest. This skill gets stronger the more the target trusts the user, with the potential to work on highly-trusting targets even when they're actively trying to resist its effects. However, if the target is hostile towards him, it can backfire. OOC opt-in.

Threadhopping/threadjacking: Yes, pretty much always, as long as it makes sense!

IC

Affection: All non-romantic touch, be it affectionate, annoyed, or neutral, is A-okay by me. For romantic or sexual overtures, let's be in touch about it and also see what develops naturally.

Violence: Please contact me first! Yoojin has a more or less normal human constitution and may not be able to withstand your character's attack, however deserved it may be.

SUPERNATURAL ABILITIES: OKAY ACTUALLY PLEASE DO PAY ATTENTION TO THIS ONE!

In his world, Yoojin has the title "Custodian", which allows him to grant those in his "custody" a handful of associated buffs, particularly to their growth rate (like a boost in EXP earned). These buffs will be significantly reduced in the Locked Place. The important thing is that getting someone in his custody will cause them to associate him with a caretaker they've had, for good or for ill.

This is something he has to actively choose to do; the skill doesn't turn on by itself or just by being around him. To get someone in his custody, he has to tell them "I love you" or otherwise communicate that sentiment, AND characters can easily not respond to or accept it. I also won't be doing it willy-nilly! This is something you can OPT INTO if you want.

So if you do want to play with that, please fill out the following little textarea! Comments to this post are screened.

Other supernatural notes: Not likely to come up, but if your character is magically sensitive and gets real close to Yoojin's chest, they might feel a trace of magical energy that does NOT seem to be Yoojin's coming from his heart area.

Relationships: If they happen naturally. Yoojin prioritizes survival and general care for others over thoughts of romance. I play him with no particular gender preference and interest only in adults ages 20 and above.

IC triggers: Things that may come up in Yoojin's past: abuses of power, abusive or neglectful guardians, valuing lives based on ability/usefulness, kidnapping, and exploitative labor practices.
Things that may trigger Yoojin: He can't easily control his temper when it comes to abusive guardians, particularly when it comes to kids.
